3D Printing

As a side-effect from all the 3D modeling I do, combined with the variety of real-life maker projects, I have become well acquainted with the 3D printing technology. Many of my creations are available in this SketchFab Collection.

I occasionally do handyman work along with other physical products. If you'd like to commission a custom build, I can help you with that.

Steampunk Room Lighting

I was renting a little attic room and it didn't have any lights! So I looked around and found a couple "industrial" style pendant lamps that I liked. I put them up with mounting zipties, and that solved the lighting problem.

But I wasn't satisfied! The "industrial" lamps gave me the idea to add some steampunk styling to the light cords. I began by 3D printing some pipe-fitting-esque covers for the mounting points. I was careful to design them to be printed without support material, and all in the "vertical" orientation so that the layer lines would produce that lovely "turned on a lathe" anisotropism. They were printed black, and then hit lightly almost end-on with spray paint which gives them a low-effort antiqueing look (because the paint doesn't get in the "shadow" of the geometry). The color is copper from one end and gold from the other for a pleasing gradient.

Those light switches are pretty ugly. I could just cover them up, but I'd still like to be able to turn the lights on and off. This calls for enginuity! I've made the 3D model files available for free (Blender and STL). Poke around to see how the light switches work.

Of course the rest of the lamp cord should be hidden as well.

While I was at it, I gave my water bottle a bit of the old steampunk treatment as well.

And that about finishes up the room!.

All of the 3D models for these 3D prints are available for download for free. There are no IP restrictions on their use so feel free to modify and re-distribute to your heart's content!

Saint George Sword

This is as close a reproduction as I could make of the sword carried by Saint George in the God's Dog comic book graphic novel thing by the Pageau brothers. The blade is a "Hanwei Tinker Bastard Sword Blade with Fuller, Sharp", and all the other components are 3D printed. You can download the Blender file for the St. George Sword here.

St. George Sword overview. I tried to stay as close as possible to the sword design portrayed in the comic book.

St. George Sword, crossguard detail. The reference here is the reference in Revelation stating, "and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword... that with it he should smite the nations". This part of the sword is never shown in the comic, so I hope it can become Fannon.

3D prints of the six medallions shown in the God's Dog comic book. The Blender files for all of these are available here.

I added unique borders for a set of 3D prints of the six medallions. The Blender files for all of these medallions are available here.
I went with "smooth" edges for the sanctified versions of each pair, and more "jagged" edges for the pagan triplet. They were printed in matte black and then spraypainted in copper and gold from a low angle in an attempt at antiqueing and emphasizing the geometry. This painting technique seems to have worked best on the Six Day Sun, and worst on the Babylonian Cherub, but perhaps that's appropriate.

The edges are also textured. I'm particularly pleased with the eyes without and within the wheel on the quadri-spect cherub rim.

Other 3D Prints

In addition to the above, there are quite a few 3D prints scattered around my site. In particular, my 3D Modeling and Jewelry pages, but you'll likely find them elsewhere as you browse.
